Friday reflection 2

MyMahi is a website made by Jeff King in 2014 for kiwi students and teachers, who are looking for a website to keep notes, write goals and even look for jobs. This week I did a career quiz to see what jobs I might be qualified for. MyMahi is a good website for loads of things, I think this website is really good at helping you find a job and keeping you organized.

"People with the life-shortening conditions Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, Huntington’s disease, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder will be able to get early access to their KiwiSaver funds."

In 2019 the rules were altered around early access for people with life-shortening congenital conditions after Tim Fairhall, who has Down syndrome, went into battle to access his KiwiSaver money so he could visit his brother and friend overseas.

"It is a big journey for me, and I enjoyed it," Fairhall said today at the announcement, with the changeset to kick in next month. He began calling for a change in 2018 and starred in a video made by the Retirement Commissioner's office to champion his case for early access to his KiwiSaver funds.

English Matrix

Hello, in this blog post I will be posting the work I have finished in my English class.

I have to pick my task from this matrix, so I decided that I will do sensory language first. 

Write a short paragraph describing a scene (real or imaginary) in first person (using the word I) using sensory language that connects to each of the 5 senses.

As I rest on the grainy sand and watch the waves crash and dance like a performer, seagulls started chirping while circle around me seeing if I have anything of worth for them, it didn't take long before they gave up on me and moved on. I wonder how it would be to become a seagull, Never alone eating anything I can whether, from the garbage or food I find on the ground, it would all taste revolting.

Language Features

1. Choose three terms (pick ones you don’t know, if possible!)

2. Write down the definition, an example, and the effect of each.

Personification, Personification is when you describe an object or something non-human with human characteristics. Turning on my shower results in it hissing at me. Using personification can make an object more noticeable.

Alliteration, Alliteration is when you use an initial consonant letter consecutively to adjacent or closely grouped words. My Dad doesn't do devilish deeds, Alliteration is used to make a story more appealing or to spotlight a certain word of a sentence.

Anaphora, Anaphora is a rhetorical device in which a word or saying is repeated at the start of a number of sentences, clauses, or phrases. Reach of a leaf, reach for a cloud, reach for a sky of blue. Using Anaphora helps empathize or convey meaning.

Metaphor and similes

A Metaphor is a sentence or a saying that is used rhetorically for a purpose.

A Simile is similar to a metaphor but the only difference is that you use like and as.

Slam poetry

I watched these three videos and my favorite was Brad McCormick's I'm not gay but I'd go gay for John Key. I think that this Slam poetry is very strange but very funny, writing a slam poem about being gay for a Prime Minister. 

"Administer some medicine to me John Key, with that sexy donkey I mean ass"

Music Through Time: Slavery

Hello, in this blog post I will be talking about the use of spirituals and the hidden messages that helped the slaves escape.

1. Explain the use of Spirituals and what they were 

2. Explain who Harriet Tubman and what the Underground Railroad was

3. Write about a spiritual you chose and highlight some lyrics and the hidden messages behind them 

4. How are these events still significant today

Spirituals are songs that slaves used to uplift other slaves and to give them hope, they can also be used in church, funerals and if the slave 'owners' allowed them to, it can be used in weddings. And lastly, they used spirituals to escape, without letting the English know what they are trying to do.

Harriet Tubman, a woman born into slavery. She helped 70 enslaved people escape using the underground railroad. As a child she suffered a head injury that gave her hypersomnia for the rest of her life, the underground railroad was a network of secret routes used in the 19th century for the slaves around America to escape their captors, and leave to Canada. At night people would go out and move slaves from their camps

They sung this song to signal the slaves that friends were in the area, Tubman used this song as well. These events are very important even now with things like BLM, and every new Kanye West song being about slavery.

Friday Reflection 1

Hello, this is my first reflection. I will be summarising our learning about identity.

https://markmanson.net/your-two-minds is a text about the two minds, the author is Mark Manson a talented writer who writes about many things. The text's purpose is to inform us all about the two minds and how they work together.

"The problem with the Thinking Mind is that we don’t completely control it."

I don't really agree with the writer, I think the whole idea of two minds is ridiculous, you are one singular being, the left and the right brain have different purposes, that said, it does NOT make you two different entities. 

"Neuroimaging testing performed in the 1990s demonstrated that parts of Broca's area - the region of the brain responsible for speech - are also active when our inner voice is speaking to us." The left side is responsible for speech, and most problem solving, the right brain is for memory and creative skills. You cannot 

Physical or Chemical Change? (HEATING ZnO)

Hypothesis: Heat is being absorbed and it can't be easily reversed back to a powder so that would make it a chemical change.

Equipment: Sample of ZnO, Hotplate, Scales, Heatproof container, Tongs, Heatproof mat.

Method:

1 Get a sample of ZnO in an evaporating dish

2 Weigh the ZnO and container then record weight

3 Heat container and ZnO on the hotplate 

4 Observe any changes

5 Take off heat and put on a heatproof mat

6 Let it cool

7 Reweigh

After awhile of heating it up, it started changing colour. it changed to a light yellow and as it got hotter it became more orange. So in conclusion, it is a physical change because it easily reversed back to white when it cooled down. At first, I thought it would've been physical but then I though that it probably wouldn't easily be reversed.

Personailty test

 Hello, in wananga today, our class did several personality tests to determine if we agreed with the results and if it suits us, etc. 

The first test I did was from https://www.16personalities.com/, I was given the title logistician and the traits honest and direct, strong-willed and dutiful, very responsible, calm and practical, create and enforce order, jack of all trades. My weaknesses were that I am stubborn, insensitive, Always by the book, judgemental. I agree with a lot that it told me, there are some that were very random though.
